The swearing-in of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court this morning is good news for the League of Women Voters, which has been working for generations to encourage participation by women and minorities in government. It is good to see another woman, and the first Latina, appointed to America’s highest court.
Justice Sotomayor’s appointment is not the only good judicial news. Here in San Francisco, the first Asian-American has been nominated to serve on the U.S. District Court. Edward Chen is a distinguished lawyer and a member of a minority group that doesn’t always get sufficient recognition for its contributions to the community. Asian-Americans are a large and growing group of California citizens. It is a good day for all of us when our justice system reflects the varied faces of modern America.
